About this job
UPSC has advertised 80 posts of Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner in the EPFO, and the eligibility is about as open as a Group A central government job gets: A DEGREE IN ANY DISCIPLINE. No specialisation, no minimum percentage, no experience. Advertisement 52/2026 (Special), dated 21 August 2026.
Two details matter more than usual for candidates here.
SRINAGAR IS A TEST CENTRE, and so is Jammu. The Recruitment Test runs at 84 centres on 20 December 2026 - Srinagar is centre 18 and Jammu is centre 34. You do not have to leave the UT to sit this.
But read the centre list carefully when you fill the form. UPSC lists SRINAGAR (18) and, separately, SRINAGAR (UTTARAKHAND) (84). They are two different towns nearly a thousand kilometres apart, and both appear on the same list. Pick 18.
The fee is Rs 25. Not a typo. And women, SC, ST and PwBD candidates pay nothing at all - which makes this, for a large share of readers, a completely free application to a Level-10 central government post.
Pay is Level-10 of the 7th CPC matrix, Rs 56,100 to Rs 1,77,500, with central government allowances on top.
The 80 seats split UR 29, OBC 18, SC 15, ST 10 and EWS 8, with three of the eighty reserved for candidates with benchmark disability.
Age is generous by central government standards: 35 for UR and EWS, 38 for OBC, 40 for SC and ST, reckoned as on 11 September 2026 - and note it is the closing date that governs, not the day you apply.
What you actually sit: a pen-and-paper test, two hours, objective, bilingual, on 20 December. There is negative marking of one-third for each wrong answer. The syllabus is broad rather than technical - general English, Indian culture and the freedom movement, the economy, the Constitution, general science and computers, elementary maths and reasoning, industrial relations and labour codes, accountancy and auditing, and current affairs. The Test carries 300 marks and the Interview 100, weighted 75:25.
Applications are open now and close at 6 PM on 11 September 2026, online at upsconline.nic.in/ora only.
What you'll do
- Serve as a Group A officer of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation under the Ministry of Labour & Employment
- Administer the provident fund, pension and insurance schemes EPFO runs for the organised workforce
- Handle compliance, inspection and assessment work with employers covered by the EPF & MP Act
- Deal with member grievances, claim settlement and the associated quasi-judicial functions of the office
- Accept posting anywhere in India across EPFO's regional and sub-regional offices
What we're looking for
- THE POST
- 80 vacancies for Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner in the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation, Ministry of Labour & Employment. Vacancy No. 26085201722.
- Reservation: UR 29, OBC 18, SC 15, ST 10, EWS 8 - which adds to exactly 80. Three of the eighty are reserved for candidates with benchmark disability, drawn from within the total rather than added to it.
- QUALIFICATION
- A degree of a recognised University or equivalent. That is the whole essential requirement - no specialisation, no percentage bar, no experience.
- Desirable, not required: a diploma in Company Law, Labour Laws or Public Administration. UPSC also notes the qualifications are relaxable at its discretion, for reasons recorded in writing, for candidates otherwise well qualified.
- AGE, as on the closing date of 11.09.2026
- 35 years for UR and EWS. 38 for OBC. 40 for SC and ST. A further 10 years for PwBD candidates, subject to an absolute ceiling of 56.
- Note that eligibility in every respect is determined as on the closing date, not the date you apply.
- PAY
- Level-10 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, which runs from Rs 56,100 to Rs 1,77,500, plus the usual central government allowances.
- THE RECRUITMENT TEST - 20 DECEMBER 2026
- Pen and paper, not computer based. Two hours. Objective questions with multiple choice answers, all carrying equal marks, in both English and Hindi.
- There IS negative marking: one-third of the marks for that question is deducted for every wrong answer. Unanswered questions carry no penalty.
- The syllabus is nine broad areas:
- General English - workmanlike use of words
- Indian Culture, Heritage and Freedom Movements
- Developmental Issues and Present Trends in the Indian Economy
- Governance and the Constitution of India
- General Science and Basic Knowledge of Computer Applications
- Elementary Mathematics, Statistics and General Mental Ability
- Industrial Relations, Labour Codes and Social Security in India
- Principles of Accountancy, Auditing and Insurance
- Current Events of National and International Importance
- WEIGHTAGE AND CUT-OFFS
- The Recruitment Test carries 300 marks and the Interview 100, weighted 75:25.
- To be considered suitable at the interview a candidate needs 50 marks and above if General or EWS, 45 and above for OBC on relaxed standards, and 40 and above for SC, ST and PwBD, out of 100.
- The Test only shortlists for interview. Clearing it is not selection.

THE TEST CENTRE - READ THIS BEFORE YOU CHOOSE
The Recruitment Test on 20 December 2026 is held at 84 centres. Both J&K centres are on the list: SRINAGAR is centre 18 and JAMMU is centre 34.
Be careful at this step. The list also contains SRINAGAR (UTTARAKHAND), centre 84 - a different town entirely, in another state. Choosing it by mistake means travelling to Uttarakhand for your exam. The one you want is SRINAGAR (18).
WHAT THE TEST IS
Pen and paper, not a computer based test. Two hours, objective questions with multiple choices, set in English and Hindi. One-third of the marks are deducted for each wrong answer; blanks are not penalised.
PwBD candidates may have a scribe and compensatory time if they wish, on producing the certificate at Appendix-V from a government healthcare institution.
AFTER THE TEST
The Test shortlists for interview - it does not select. The Test is out of 300 and the interview out of 100, weighted 75:25, and interview suitability needs 50 marks for General and EWS, 45 for OBC and 40 for SC, ST and PwBD.
