About this job
India Post has opened its Gramin Dak Sevak engagement, and it is the most accessible government recruitment of the year: 10TH STANDARD PASS, and NO EXAMINATION OF ANY KIND. Notification 17-12/2026-GDS, GDS Online Engagement Schedule-II, July 2026.
Selection is computed from your Class 10 marks. There is no written test, no interview, no skill test. You enter your 10th marks, and the merit list does the rest.
The requirement people trip on: your 10th certificate must carry PASSING MARKS IN BOTH MATHEMATICS AND ENGLISH. A pass overall is not enough if either of those two is not cleared.
For candidates here, the local language condition is easier than most: the Jammu and Kashmir circle - which the notification defines as covering J&K AND LADAKH - accepts URDU OR HINDI studied to 10th standard. Either one.
Age is 18 to 40 as on 21 September, which is a far wider window than most central recruitments, and relaxation runs to 45 for SC and ST, 43 for OBC and 50 for PwBD.
Pay: Branch Postmaster Rs 12,000 to Rs 29,380 a month. Assistant Branch Postmaster and Dak Sevak Rs 10,000 to Rs 24,470.
The fee is Rs 100 - and ALL FEMALE APPLICANTS pay nothing, along with SC, ST, PwBD and transwomen applicants.
ONE THING TO BE STRAIGHT ABOUT: THE J&K VACANCY COUNT IS NOT OUT YET. Job sites are reporting "25,000+ posts" nationally, but that figure appears nowhere in the notification, and no circle or division breakdown is published in it either. India Post puts the division-wise position on the application portal, and that portal opens on 31 AUGUST. We will publish the Jammu & Kashmir figures the day they appear.
THE DATES, WHICH ARE STAGGERED - READ THEM CAREFULLY
One-time registration: 31 August to 19 September, up to 5 PM.
Application submission and fee payment: 2 September to 21 September, up to 5 PM.
Correction window: 23 and 24 September.
Registration and application are two separate steps with two different deadlines. Register early - the application window closes two days after registration does, and you cannot apply without having registered first.
If you have your 10th marksheet ready, there is nothing else to arrange. Apply only at indiapost.gov.in.
What you'll do
- Serve as a Gramin Dak Sevak with the Department of Posts as a Branch Postmaster, Assistant Branch Postmaster or Dak Sevak
- Run or assist at a Branch Office serving a rural post village, handling mail, savings, insurance and departmental services
- As a Branch Postmaster, reside in the post village itself and provide accommodation meeting the Department's prescribed standard, declared before engagement
- Work in the local language of the circle - Urdu or Hindi for the Jammu & Kashmir circle, which covers J&K and Ladakh
- Apply through one circle and division of your choosing, based on the local language you studied at 10th standard
What we're looking for
- WHO CAN APPLY
- A Secondary School Examination pass certificate - 10th standard - WITH PASSING MARKS IN BOTH MATHEMATICS AND ENGLISH, from a board recognised by the Government of India, a State Government or a Union Territory. That is the whole educational requirement. There is nothing above it and no experience is asked for.
- You must also have studied the local language of the circle you apply to, up to 10th standard. For the JAMMU AND KASHMIR CIRCLE - which the notification defines as covering J&K AND LADAKH - the local language is URDU OR HINDI. Either qualifies.
- AGE
- 18 to 40 years, determined as on the last date for submission of applications, 21 September 2026.
- Relaxation above the 40-year limit: SC and ST 5 years, OBC 3 years, PwBD 10 years, PwBD with OBC 13 years, PwBD with SC or ST 15 years.
- THE THREE POSTS
- Branch Postmaster (BPM) - TRCA slab Rs 12,000 to Rs 29,380 a month.
- Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) and Dak Sevak - TRCA slab Rs 10,000 to Rs 24,470.
- A BPM must live in the post village itself - the village where the Branch Office functions - and provide accommodation meeting the Department's prescribed standard. A declaration to that effect is required before engagement. Weigh that before choosing BPM as a preference.
- SELECTION - NO EXAMINATION AT ALL
- There is no written test and no interview. Merit is computed from the marks you obtained in the 10th standard examination, entered from your own marksheet at the application stage. Nothing else is scored.
- Candidates whose board cancelled the examination during the Covid-19 pandemic and issued a pass certificate to all candidates are awarded a uniform 66.67 per cent by the system; such applicants select "Pass" against each subject when applying.
- Where two applicants tie on merit, the order of preference is: older date of birth first, then ST transwoman, ST female, SC transwoman, SC female, and so on down the notified order.
- VACANCY NUMBERS
- The notification does NOT print circle-wise or division-wise vacancy figures. It directs candidates to the online portal, where the tentative division-wise position is published. Those figures become visible when registration opens on 31 August 2026 - so the Jammu & Kashmir number is not yet a published fact, whatever some job sites are reporting.
How to apply
Notification 17-12/2026-GDS, Department of Posts, GDS Online Engagement Schedule-II, July 2026.
THE SCHEDULE IS IN THREE STAGES - THEY ARE NOT THE SAME DEADLINE
1. Online one-time registration: 31.08.2026 to 19.09.2026, up to 1700 hrs.
2. Submission of application and fee payment: 02.09.2026 to 21.09.2026, up to 1700 hrs.
3. Correction window for registration and application: 23.09.2026 and 24.09.2026.
You cannot submit an application without registering first, and registration closes two days BEFORE the application window does. Register in the first week rather than the last.
HOW TO APPLY
Online only, at https://www.indiapost.gov.in/gdsonlineengagement. Registration and login are enabled only during the windows above - the portal will not let you in before 31 August.
WHAT YOU ENTER
Your circle, board name, year of passing and the marks obtained in your 10th standard examination, taken from your own marksheet. Divisions and post preferences are then offered to you based on the local language you studied. Photograph and signature are uploaded at the same stage.
FEE
Rs 100 for all posts notified within your chosen division. Exempt entirely: ALL FEMALE APPLICANTS, SC and ST applicants, PwBD applicants and transwomen applicants.
VACANCIES
Division-wise figures are published on the portal, not in the notification. They become visible when registration opens on 31 August. Choose your division after seeing them.
A WARNING FROM THE DEPARTMENT ITSELF
India Post states that it communicates only through email addresses ending in @indiapost.gov.in or @indiapostgdsonline.gov.in, and that it is not responsible for fraudulent messages about GDS engagement circulated by anyone else. Nobody legitimate will ask you for money beyond the Rs 100 fee paid on the official portal.
